Back To Backpack Posture
Back To Backpack Posture
by Dr. Michelle Irwin
Slinging a heavy backpack over one shoulder every day without the proper fitting can cause postural distortions that lead to restricted movement, affect balance, cause neck pain, back pain, and even headaches. Many of the same students that don’t have the proper fitting also have their backpacks overloaded and this can lead to not just pain but can also damage or lead to long term spinal changes.
Using the proper type of backpack with a padded back, wide padded shoulders straps, along with chest straps can reduce the possibility of postural distortions and pains. If the backpack is too heavy speak with your child’s teacher or school about how to reduce the load.
Knowing that the load should not exceed 10% of your child’s bodyweight and making sure that when they are wearing it, they are able to stand with good posture are key to catching the potential issues before they get too big. Prevention now will help them when they reach adulthood.
Ask us in the office for a backpack check if you have concerns about what you are seeing with your child’s set up!
